Located in Chapel Hill, NC, UNC General Administration (UNC System Office) invites applications for the position of Director of Media Relations.

The Director of Media Relations will work closely with the Associate Vice President, President, Chief of Staff, and other senior leadership to draft major news stories for the President and identify opportunities to promote the President’s public voice. This will involve significant engagement across General Administration and throughout the UNC system, as well as regular participation in state and national discussions around higher education.

The position will serve as the primary media contact for General Administration and work with other members of GA staff to create responses to media inquiries as well as feed stories to the varying media outlets.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Communications Division at UNC General Administration provides leadership and subject matter expertise and coordination for the University’s communications, media affairs, and community relation’s activities. The Division promotes the strategic goals and objectives of the University to a variety of internal and external constituencies to enable a climate of public and private support for public higher education in North Carolina. This includes formulating and implementing a comprehensive media relations program, overseeing a strategic branding strategy, and producing a variety of communications work products that advance the University’s goals and priorities at the local, state, national, and global levels.

Bachelor’s Degree required with preference for an advanced degree in public administration, public policy, communications or a related field.

A minimum of three to five years of experience in public communications branding and working with various media outlets.

Competencies

Exceptional writing and ability to demonstrate strong relationships with varying media outlets.

Prior experience in or with higher education and or public sector is preferred.
